Jared Miller/Orleans Shutout Gatemen

WAREHAM, MA: The struggling Gatemen looked to defeat Orleans on its home turf on national television on Thursday night at Spillane Field.

The Gatemen had been struggling all season long and FOX College Sports Atlantic came to Spillane to broadcast the game nationally.

Luckily for the Firebirds and starter Jared Miller (Vanderbilt), the Orleans bats were active but the Gatemen bats were silent – literally. The Firebirds defeated the Gatemen, 4-0.

Jordan Luplow (Fresno State) got things started with a single. He was then caught stealing. Then Kevin Kramer singled past the glove of third baseman Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) and he later scored on an error by Chris Chinea (LSU) making it 1-0 Orleans.

That wasn’t it. Vince Conde (Vanderbilt) led off the third with a double and he advanced ot third on a flyout to left by Ross Kivett (Kansas State). Conde scored with Collin Slaybaugh (Washington State) hit a sacrifice fly to Sean McMullen (LSU) in right field. This extended the Orleans lead to 2-0.

The third run came in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Luplow to left center.

The fourth and final run came in the top of the eighth when Slaybaugh led off with a walk. He advanced to second on a single by Austin Davidson (Pepperdine) and then Slaybaugh advanced to third on a 6-3 double play. Then Luplow got his fourth hit of the night on a double that scored Slaybaugh from third base to give Orleans the 4-0 lead.

Kurt McCune (LSU) picked up the loss but didn’t pitch badly – the offense just didn’t give him any runs to work with. He gave up two earned runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Miller got the win while only giving up two hits in seven innings walking two and striking out four.

The next game for the Gatemen is back at Spillane Field on Friday against the Harwich Mariners at 7:00 p.m.
