WAREHAM, MA: The Wareham Gatemen managed only 2 hits and lost their 6th and final regular season game of the year against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks 2-1. Hyannis extended their lead over 2nd place Bourne to 8 points and look headed towards the CCBL Western Division regular season title.
The Harbor Hawks got six scoreless innings from Corey Roberts (UNC-Charlotte). In a spot start, the righty allowed just one hit, while striking out three Gatemen.
Meanwhile, Wareham starter Brent Suter (Harvard) answered with seven strong innings of his own, but his lone hiccup in the bottom of the 4th cost the Gatemen. Suter allowed a single to Joey Rickard (Arizona) to lead off the inning and then plunked Dan Gulbransen (Jacksonville). Kevin Plawecki (Purdue) followed with a double to bring home Rickard and make the score 1-0. Hyannis tacked on one morein the frame when Chadd Krist’s (Cal) single brought home Gulbransen.
Suter’s final line through seven innings was those two runs allowed on just four hits, all while striking out a season high nine Harbor Hawks.
The Gatemen got to the Harbor Hawk bull pen in the 7th thanks to some shaky Hyannis defense. Max Muncy (Baylor) reached second base on one of Hyannis’s five errors on the evening, and then took third on a ground out by Johnny Field (Arizona). Muncy then scored on a wild pitch from Matt Flemer (Cal) to cut the Gatemen deficit to 2-1.
That’s as close as the Gatemen would get though. The Harbor Hawks brought in their closer Nick Wittgren (Purdue) in the top of the ninth, and he was able to strand the tying run on second for his seventh save of the season.
The Gatemen are back in action tonight at Spillane Field against the Y-D Red Sox at 7 PM.
