WAREHAM, MA: A Jabari Henry (Florida International) 3 run homer in the 7th inning broke open a tight game and highlighted the Harwich Mariner’s 6-2 win over the Wareham Gatemen on their first trip to Spillane Field this season. On a rainy night that produced off and on rain throughout the game, the Gatemen dropped their first game of the season to a CCBL Eastern Division Team.
After a scoreless top half of the first inning, Bobby Brosnahan (Michigan), making his 2nd start of the season, had a run to work with when he toed the rubber in the second inning as a Daniel Palka’s (Georgia Tech) rbi single staked the Gatemen a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.
Wareham would take that lead into the 3rd inning and get the first 2 outs. However, clutch hitting by Harwich turned this game around for the Mariners. Austin Nola’s (LSU) 2 out rbi single was followed by a run scoring double by Virginia Tech’s Andrew Rash.
The teams traded runs in the 5th inning. Austin Nola produced his 2nd run of the game on an rbi groundout to short; giving Harwich a 2 run cushion. The Gatemen matched that run on a sacrafice fly by Brandon Thomas (Georgia Tech) in the bottom half of the inning.
The Harwich 3-2 advantage would hold steady until the top of the 7th inning. After relief pitcher Joseph Flynn (Franklin Pierce) walked his first 2 batters, David Fischer (UCONN) inherited both runners with no outs. After picking off the runner at 2nd base for one out, he would walk Austin Nola and then strike out Aaron Barbosa (Northeastern). Just as it looked like Fischer would work his way out of the inning, Jabari “The Hammer” Henry hit a 1-0 pitch into the left-field bleachers and give Harwich a 6-2 lead.
The Wareham offense could not put together a rally over the final 3 innings and would fall to the Mariners 6-2. The winning pitcher was Pierce Johnson (Missouri State) and the loss was given to Bobby Brosnahan who falls to 1-1 on the season. Offensively, Daniel Palka was the highlight for Wareham going 2 for 4 with an rbi; raising his season averge to .278. The game marked the season debuts of UCONN players LF Mazzilli & John Andreoli.
Wareham will play next on Saturday night as they welcome the Orleans Firebirds to Spillane Field for a 7:00pm game.
