WAREHAM, MA: For the 5th time in as many tries Wareham (15-15)fell to Hyannis (19-11) 4-3 on a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Gatemen got off to a great start in the bottom of the 2nd when Willy Carmona (Stony Brook) hit a three run homer into the trees in leftfield to give Wareham a 3-0 lead.
The Harbor Hawks scored a run of their own in the third when Joey Rickard (Arizona) scored John Frost (UAB). After that, the game evolved into a pitcher’s duel between Jon Moscot (Pepperdine) and Joshua Turley (Baylor). From the 4th inning on, Moscot retired thirteen straight Gatemen, while Turley retired thelast fourteen he faced. The duo combined for 14 strikeouts.
But after great starting pitching, the Harbor Hawks would get to the Gatemen bullpen in the eighth inning. Eric Stamets (Evansiville) drove in Frost with a grounder to short stop, and Joey Rickard (Arizona) followed with an RBI single to knot things up at 3. The Gatemen were set down in order the stage was set for Frost to be the hero. He came to the plate with two on and two outs and grounded one through the hole on the left side to score Kevin Plawecki (Purdue) with the winning run.
Wareham’s back in action tomorrow at Spillane Field at 5 PM against division rival Cotuit.
