WAREHAM, MA: Luke Farrell (Northwestern) tossed the Gatemen’s second straight complete game to help Wareham complete the double header sweep with a 2-1 win over Brewster.
Farrell and Daniel Lanfield (Memphis) were locked in a pitcher’s duel for the first three innings as neither team could push a run across the plate. Finally, in the 4th inning, the Gatemen broke the ice. Willy Carmona (Stony Brook) led off the inning with a walk and took second on a stolen base. After back to back flyouts to center, short stop Derrick Dennis (Michigan) blooped a single into left that scored Carmona. Rob Refsnyder (Arizona) followed with a deep triple to center that drove in Dennis to make the score 2-0.
Brewster wouldn’t go down without a fight, in the 6th, the Whitecaps finally got to Farell. Preston Beck (Texas-Arlington) reached on an error and scored on a double by Taylor Davis (Morehead State). From there though the Gatemen defense stiffened. Farrell induced a ground out to second and then the Gatemen foiled a suicide squeeze attempt, picking Davis off third.
In the 7th and final inning Brewster threatened again putting runners on the corners with two outs, but second baseman Mott Hyde (Georgia Tech) saved the day. He soared to grab Beck’s line drive that seemed destined for the left center field gap and preserved the win for the Gatemen.
With the double header sweep, the Gatemen improve to 3-1 on the year while Brewster falls to 2-2. Next up for Wareham is a trip to Cotuit at 5 PM Tuesday night.
