Gatemen Sweep Bourne – Advance to CCBL Western Division Finals

WAREHAM, MA:  – After losing a 2-0 leading heading into the bottom of the 9th inning, the Wareham Gatemen rallied in the 11th inning; capped by an LJ Mazzilli (UCONN) walk-off hit to give Wareham a dramatic 3-2 victory over the defending CCBL Champion Bourne Braves; propelling the Gatemen into the Cape Cod Baseball League Western Division Finals where they will face the Cotuit Kettleers.

The Gatemen were seemingly in control of this game through 8 innings.  Wareham starting pitching Josh Urban (Texas) – a surprise assignment by Head Coach Cooper Farris – made his most impressive appearance of the season in the most exciting game of the 2010 season.  Expecting Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) and then recent CCBL pitcher of the week Joseph Flynn (Franklin Pierce), the ball was handed to Urban and he did not disapoint.  Urban held the Braves hitless into the 5th inning and kept the Bourne lineup in check all night.

Staked to a 1-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by LJ Mazzilli in the 3rd inning, Urban would preserve that lead through 7 innings; allowing only 4 hits while striking out 6 batters and not allowing a run.  Wareham added a run in the 6th inning when Max Muncy (Baylor) scored on a wild pitch by Bourne starter Anthony Meo (Coastal Carolina).

After a scoreless inning of relief by Jake Davies (Georgia Tech) in the 8th, Wareham called on Ken Ferrer (Elon) to close out the game in the 9th.  Unfortunately, Ferrer would blow his save opportunity.  Zach MacPhee (Arizona State) singled off of Ferrer to drive in a run an cut the Wareham lead in half.  After a strike out, pinch hitter Mike Nemeth (UCONN) delivered a game tying single, knotting the game 2-2 and leaving the Braves in prime position to claim the lead with 2 runners on base with 1 out.  Ferrer, however, would work out of the jam and give his team a chance.

After a scoreless inning for Ferrer, who remained in the game to pitch the 10th inning, Bourne, Massachusetts native Keith Bilodeu (Maine) entered the game with a runner on base in the 11th inning.  Bilodeau would strike out the first batter he faced but walk the next two to load the bases with one out.  In dramatic fashion, Bilodeau struck out the next two batters; ending the threat and giving Wareham an opportunity in the home half of the 11th inning..

Bourne’s CCBL Reliever of the Year and winner of the league’s Pro Prospect Award winner Tony Zych (Louisville) completed his 3rd inning of work in the 10th inning and gave way to Kyle McMyne (Villanova).   John Andreoli (UCONN) reached on an infield error and advance to 2nd base.  Derek Dennis (Michigan) walked and Adam McClain (Memphis) laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases for the Gatemen with no out.  This set the stage for LJ Mazzilli who drilled a pitch into the gap; driving in a run and giving the Wareham Gatemen a 3-2 playoff win over the Bourne Braves.

The win clinched the series for the Gatemen who advance to the Cape Cod Baseball League Western Division Finals where they will face the Cotuit Kettleers in a best-of-three series beginning Monday at 3:00pm at Lowell Park in Cotuit.
