HARWICH, MA: The Wareham Gatemen lost a 2-1 lead in the 5th inning and the Harwich Mariners never looked back; taking a 6-2 win and handing the Gatemen their season high 5th straight loss.
As the rain moved over Whitehouse Field in the 5th inning, it looked as if the Gatemen would take a rain-shortened 2-1 win. However, like the Wareham offense, the clouds disappeared and Harwich scored 4 runs in the decisive bottom half of the 5th inning; highlighted by a John Wooten (East Carolina) bases clearing, 2-out, 3-run triple that put Harwich ahead 5-2. Austin Nola (LSU) produced another run in the inning on an rbi single.
Earlier rbi’s by Robert Refsnyder (Arizona), who singled and LJ Mazzilli (UCONN), who drew a bases loaded walk were the only runs managed by a slumping Wareham offense.
Starting Wareham pitcher Matthew Grimes (Georgia Tech) was looking for his first CCBL win but the Harwich 5th inning would be his undoing. He was replaced with 2 outs in that same 5th inning by Daniel Feehan (UCONN) who made his league-leading 19th appearance of the season.
The Harwich Mariners got a terrific 4 inning relief outing from Tyler Jones (LSU) who took over in the 4.1 innings and didn’t allow a run on only 1 hit. Meanwhile, Wareham left 8 runners on base; continuing a recent trend of not getting the necessary clutch hit at critical spots during the 5 game skid.
Wareham did get good production at the top of the order as Brandon Thomas (Georgia Tech) got two hits batting second for the first time this season. Robert Refsnyder also got two hits for the Gatemen (18-21), who remain in 3rd place in the CCBL Western Division.
The Gatemen will play their final game before the CCBL All-Star break on Wednesday night vs. the Cotuit Kettleers at Spillane Field.
