Gatemen Play Role of Spoiler – Defeat Commodores 5-3

08/07/08 – Gatemen Play Role of Spoiler – Defeat Commodores 5-3

The Falmouth Commodores, hoping to move into first place in the Western Division with a victory, are defeated in 10 innings by the Wareham Gatemen 5-3 at Arnie Allen Diamond. The Gatemen provided starting pitcher Brandon Workman (Texas) with a 3-1 but a tired Workman allowed 2 runs in the 7th in an otherwise terrific start for the dominant right-hander. The tied game would eventually be taken into extra innings where the Gatemen scored 2 runs in the 10th for the 5-3 victory.

Falmouth OF AJ Pollock (Notre Dame), who has been hard to get out all season for Wareham, was named the league’s Most Valuable Player prior to the game. He followed that up with a solo homerun in the first inning to give Falmouth 1-0 lead. In the 2nd, the Gatemen would tie the score by drawing two walks, advancing on a wild pitch and then scored on a Brett Eibner (Arkansas) ground out.

Workman would hold the Commodores off and give Wareham a chance to take the lead in the fourth inning. Aaron Baker (Oklahoma) and Kipp Shutz (Indiana) singled to start off the inning. With runners on 2nd and third and with two outs, Jake Lemmerman (Duke) drove a single back up the middle to score two runs and give the Gatemen a 3-1 lead.

The game stayed at 3-1 until Falmouth’s half of the 7th. Two consecutive singles to lead off the inning put Falmouth in position to score. Michael Thomas’ rbi, infield single brought the Commodores to within one run at 3-2. An attempted squeeze by batter Brandon Macias (Souther Mountain CC) and base runner Ryan Jones (Wichita State) would result in a controversial call at the plate as Jones ruled out by the home plate umpire. The very next batter, Joey Wong (Oregon State), singled to tie the score.

Brandon Workman was lifted for Austin Graham (Alabama). Graham had perhaps his best relief performance of the year by shutting down the Commodores the rest of the way; going 3 innings, not allowing a run, yielding only 2 hits and striking out one.

In the 10th, Lemmerman led off the inning with a double for Wareham. A Shea Vucinich (Washington State) single would advance the runner to third and a Blake Dean (LSU) single gave Wareham the 4-3 lead. Two consecutive walks; the last resulting in an rbi for Eibner, would give the Gatemen a 5-3 lead. Graham gave up a 2 out single to Joey Wong but closed out Falmouth to pick up his first win of the season.

For Falmouth, the loss leaves them 1 point behind division leader and rained-out Cotuit in the ever tightening race for the playoffs in the Western Division where no more than 2 points separate first and fourth place. Falmouth will play Hyannis and Bourne will take on the Gatemen tonight at 7:00pm. Like Wareham, both Cotuit and Hyannis play two games today and any of the top 4 teams can claim a playoff spot or qualify for a Friday “play-in” game today; the final day of the regular season.

Robby Broach (Tulane) will get his final start of the season for Wareham vs. Chatham at 1:00pm. Either Jimmy Saris (Georgetown) or Matt Way (Washington State) will take the mound tonight in the 7:00pm and final game of the season vs. the Bourne Braves.
