Gatemen Overtake Bourne for 2nd Place

BOX SCORE

WAREHAM, MA:  The Wareham Gatemen closed the 2011 regular season with a 4-3 win over the Bourne Braves – their season high 5th in a row; including 2 straight over the Bourne Braves who Wareham will host on Friday night in game 1 of the CCBL Western Division semi-finals at 7:00pm.

Matthew Grimes (Georgia Tech) saved his best starting pitching performance of the year for the regular season finale and in doing so, helped Wareham secure home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.  Grimes pitched 7 shutout innings; allowing only 2 hits, walking just 1 and striking out 4.

Max Muncy (Baylor) drove in the first Gatemen run of the night in the 3rd inning with an infield hit; one of four hits for Muncy on the night.

That lead would hold until the 8th inning. Andy Flett (Louisville) entered the game to start the inning for the Gatemen and got into some trouble.  Daniel Feehan (UCONN) replaced Flett; making his league leading 22nd appearance of the year.  That total is also the 2nd most in a single season it Wareham Gatemen history.  Feehan, however, gave up a 2 run single to Tommy Coyle (North Carolina) and Bourne took a 2-1 lead; deflating the large and loud crowd on hand at Spillane Field.  Coyle’s UNC teammate Colin Moran stepped to the plate and hit a drive to left but Gatemen left-field Johnny Field made a diving, spectacular catch that perhaps saved the game for Wareham.

The Gatemen wasted no time tying the game in the bottom half of the exciting 8th inning.  Robert Refsnyder (Arizona) lead off the inning with a doulbe and Max Muncy drove him home with a double of his own to tie the game 2-2.  Muncy later scored on a wild pitch.  Wareham added a run and took a 4-2 lead into the 9th inning.

Bourne fought right back and scored a run off of Feehan on an rbi single by Kyle Farmer (Georgia).  Gatemen All-Star closer Konner Wade (Arizona) replaced Feehan and induced a fly ball to center and then ended the game on a strikeout to the delight of the Spillane Field faithful.  Wade picked up his CCBL leading 12th save.

The Gatemen finish the season in 2nd place in the CCBL Western Division with a 23-21 record and will play the Bourne Braves in a best of 3 first round playoff series.
