When the Brewster Whitecaps defeated the Hyannis Harbor Hawks last night at McKeon Park, it clinched one of the Western Division playoff spots for the Wareham Gatemen. With 5 games remaining for Hyannis, the most points that the HarborHawks can achieve is 36. The Gatemen currently have 37. The new playoff format in the Cape Cod Baseball League places the top 4 teams in each division in the playoffs. Because Hyannis cannot clinch Wareham, the Gatemen will finish no worse that 4th place in the Western Division.
Hyannis can still move up in the standing and catch current 4th place team Falmouth who has 33 points. The Cotuit Kettleers and Bourne Braves each have 40 points and are tied at the top of the division. Wareham is in 3rd place; just 3 points back in what has been a tight, up and down division race all season.
This will be the 2nd consecutive playoff appearance for Wareham. In 2009, the Gatemen were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Cotuit Kettleers. Prior to that appearance, Wareham’s last playoff appearance was in 2006 when they lost to YD in the deciding game of the Cape Cod Baseball League Championship series. Overall, this is Wareham’s 24th playoff appearance since 1976 and that includes a league record 13 straight playoff appearance from 1990 to 2002. The Gatemen have won 6 CCBL Championships, last winning back to back titles in 2001 and 2002.
In the East, only division leading Yarmouth-Dennis has clinched a playoff berth. 5th place Chatham has 6 games remaining, including 2 double headers and can move up as high as 2nd place depending on the outcome of games over the course of the next couple of days. Brewster is currently in 2nd, followed by the hottest team in the league and last night’s Gatemen opponent, Orleans who is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. The Harwich Mariners are in 4th place.
The playoff format this season features 3 best-of-three playoff rounds. The first place team in each division will play the 4th place team in their respective divisions. The 2nd and 3rd place teams will have their own series. The winners will play in the division finals and the surviving teams will meet in an East vs. West championship series. The playoffs will begin on Friday, August 6th.
