Gatemen fall 5-0 to Firebirds as Offensive Woes Continue

The Orleans Firebirds showed why they have the best record in the CCBL with a convincing 5-0 victory over the Wareham Gatemen at Spillane Field on Sunday night.

Mitchell Jordan (W, 4-0) came into the game having pitched 21 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run, and he picked up right where he left off against the Gatemen.  He went 6 shutout innings, allowing only two singles.  His 0.00 ERA is tops in the Cape League.

Ryan Williamson (L, 0-2) was perfect through 3 innings for the Gatemen, but his no-hitter was broken up by Kyle Lewis with a 2-run homer to right in the fourth.  Williamson then gave up back-to-back solo shots to Nick Zammarelli and Sean Murphy in the fifth, extending the deficit to 4-0.

Grant Dyer relieved Williamson to begin the sixth and was rudely greeted by a solo homer by Alex Call on his first pitch.  After that, though, Dyer pitched a hitless three frames.  He was relieved in the ninth by Jared Price, who tossed a scoreless inning in his first appearance for the Gatemen.

The Gatemen couldn’t muster any offense against the Firebirds bullpen, and their scoreless streak was extended to 22 innings dating back to Friday’s win over Bourne.  They travel to Harwich Monday to face the Mariners at 6:30 in a game that was originally scheduled to be played last Sunday.
