Gatemen Escape with 6-5 Win

BOX SCORE

WAREHAM, MA:  Barret Astin (Arkansas) scattered three runs over eight strong innings as Wareham (15-14) won its third straight game 6-5 against Orleans (12-14-3).

The Gatemen jumped out to an early lead on a Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) RBI single in the bottom  of the first that scored John Andreoli.

The Firebirds answered right back with a run in the second. Terran Senay (NC State) blooped a two out single to left that brought home Maxx Tissenbaum (Stony Brook) to tie the game at 1.

Wareham jumped back out in front in the third. LJ Mazzilli (UConn) led off with a single and Andreoli picked up his second of three hits to put runners on the corners. Rob Refsnyder (Arizona) followed with a double of the wall in left center to bring home Mazzilli and then Andreoli scored his second of three runs on a ground out by Palka to give the Gatemen a 3-1 lead.

Orleans knotted things back up in the top of the fifth with a two out rally. Jake Stewart (Stanford) tripled to score Reed Gragnani (Virginia). Then Matt Duffy (Long Beach State) ripped a double that scored Stewart to bring the score to 3-3.

That tie game did not last for long. Palka picked up his third RBI of the game with a double that once again brought home Andreoli.

Shaky Firebird defense gave the Gatemen an insurance run in the 6th. Jeff Reynolds (Harvard) was hit by a pitch, moved to third after a bad pickoff throw, and scored on an errant throw by the catcher Ronnie Shaeffer (UC Irvine).

Wareham picked up another crucial insurance run in the bottom of the 8th. Mike Fischer (Columbia) came home on a deep double to left field by Mazzilli.

The Gatemen would need each and every one of those insurance runs, because things got dicey in the 9th. After pushing 2 runs across to make it a 6-5 game, the Firebirds put runners on the corners with one out. Dan Feehan (UConn) entered and induced a ground ball double play to end the game.

The Gatemen are back in action Saturday night at 7 PM in Hyannis.
