We hope to debut our newest team during a preseason game on June 9th when the Gatemen welcome the Newport (RI) Gulls from the New England Collegiate Baseball League to Spillane Field for a preseason game. Mike Monaco is a rising junior at the University of Notre Dame, where he is studying broadcasting and journalism. Mike covers men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer and softball as a play-by-play broadcaster for UND.com, the athletic department’s site that live broadcasts all home games. Mike also works for WVFI, calling football, men’s basketball and hockey. He is also the Sports Editor of the school newspaper, The Observer. Mike has been a lifelong baseball fan, played through high school and last summer interned with NESN, a regional cable television network in New England, as a Red Sox intern.
Austin Pollack will be a junior in the fall at Syracuse University, where he studies Broadcast and Digital Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Austin writes for the sports and features sections at The Daily Orange, as well as being involved with Z89 Radio. He is a staff writer for Orange Fizz, a Syracuse football and basketball recruiting site, and also contributes to Fizz Radio. A native of Massachusetts, Austin’s first shot at broadcasting baseball began on his family’s couch when he was just eight years old. He turned the volume off and would broadcast Red Sox games to nobody but himself. An avid Boston sports fan, Austin interned at NESN last summer in the New Media department where he helped write and edit stories for NESN.com.
Both will share play by play duties this summer and also contribute to www.gatemen.org with game stories and other features.
