Four Gatemen Named West Division All-Stars

Cape Cod Baseball League coaches got together on Saturday morning and selected the East & West Division All-Stars who will square off next Saturday in the league’s showcase event at the Friendly’s Cape League All-Star Game at Red Wilson Field in Yarmouth, Massachusetts. Four Wareham Gatemen were named the West squad who will suit up alongside their West Division honorees.

OF Cole Sturgeon (Louisville), INF Ethan Gross (Memphis), INF Tino Lipson (UC-Davis) & RHP Bradley Roney were all selected to represent the Wareham Gatemen as reserves next Saturday.

The Gatemen have had a lot of success in the recent Cape League All-Star games as the MVP from the West Squad in each of the last three years were from Wareham. Zach Wilson (Arizona State) won the honor in 2010, Konner Wade (Arizona) in 2011 and Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) last year in Harwich.

Cole Sturgeon (Louisville), could have arguably been named an All-Star in 2012 as he had one of the most productive seasons as a leadoff hitter in Gatemem history. He was rewarded at the close of the season by being named to the All-League Team. Sturgeon arrived in Wareham late due to Louisville’s success in advancing to the College World Series but he has provided a needed lift to the Wareham offense and is hitting .250 with 9 rbi, 6 doubles and 22 hits.

Ethan Gross (Memphis) is the other Gatemen All-Star that was part of the 2012 Championship team. Gross has played in all 32 games for the Gatemen; mostly at shortstop and has made only 2 errors on the season. He is hitting .246 with 7 rbi.

Tino Lipson (UC-Davis), despite missing a significant amount of time due to an injury, was also named to the West All-Stars. He is leading the Gatemen, hitting .307, and the second baseman has beed credited with just 1 error on the season.

Bradley Roney (Southern Miss) has been one of the top relievers out of the Gatemen bullpen this season. A two-way player (he also has 37 at bats), Roney has a 1.97 era in his 11 appearances and has struck out 17 in 13.2 inning of work.

The Falmouth Commodores dominate the starting lineup for the West Squad, placing 6 starters on the team. Bourne’s Jaren Long (Ohio State) will be the starting pitcher for the CCBL West Division All-Stars. In the East, Harwich & Brewster each have 3 starters and the YD Red Sox placed 7 players on the East Team who will have the chance to play the game on their home field.

Festivities begin on Saturday, July 27th at Red Wilson Field in Yarmouth at 12:30 with batting practice that is open for all to see. Autograph sessions, merchandise tents and the annual homerun contest will also be part of the pregame festiviites all leading to the 4:35pm first pitch. Tickets can be picked up at any of the ten ballfields across the league.
