Farrell Complete Game Highlights Gatemen 7-3 Win at YD

BOX SCORE

YARMOUTH, MA:   For the 2nd consecutive time, Gatemen RHP Luke Farrell (Northwestern) pitches a 7 inning complete game as part of a double-header and the Wareham Gatemen defeat the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 7-2 in game 1 of the scheduled twin-bill in Yarmouth.

Coming off of 2 consecutive losses, the offense provided Farrell plenty of support; giving him an early lead in the 2nd inning.  After stranding two runners in the first inning, the Gatemen got a clutch rbi single by third baseman Jeff Reynolds #Harvard and Wareham lead 1-0.  That lead would be short-lived, however, as the as Chris Serritella (Southern Illinois) hit is 2nd homer of the season to tie the game for YD.

The Red Sox took the lead on an rbi groundout to second base by Matt Reynolds (Arkansas); giving starting pitcher Zach Weiss a 1 run cushion.  That cushion would last only 1 inning, however, as the Gatemen offense put 3 on the board in the 5th inning.  With one out, Brandon Thomas (Georgia Tech) recorded his 2nd hit of the game and advance to 2nd on a throwing error by the pitcher.  Johnny Field #Arizona followed with a hit of his own to score Thomas and tie the game 2-2.  Wareham was not finished.

LJ Mazzilli (UCONN) doubled to put two runners in scoring position before Max Muncy (Baylor) double; allowing Mazzilli and Field to cross the plate and put Wareham back on top 4-2.  Relief pitcher Mark Anderson (St Marys) limited any further damage and induced an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.

After Farrell sat down the Red Sox in order in the 5th, the Gatemen offense matched their impressive 5th inning; scoring 3 additional runs to break the game open.  The highlight of the inning was a 2 run double by LJ Mazzilli that was followed by an rbi single by Robert Refsnyder (Arizona).

YD added a run in the 7th and final inning but Farrell would find his way through the final frame; preserving the Gatemen win and recording his 2nd win and 2nd 7-inning complete game in as many starts.  He allowed only 3 hits, struck out 5 and his era for the season is 1.93.  Offensively, Brandon Thomas’s 2 hits raise his average to .407; good for 8th best in the CCBL.  LJ Mazzilli, playing in only his 2nd game since arriving from the NCAA Super Regionals, had 2 doubles.  Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) and Robert Refsnyder also had multi-hit games for the Gatemen.

The win improves the Gatemen record to 5-4 and they will look for the double-header sweep in game 2 of the scheduled double-header.
