Falmouth Spoils Wareham Chance to Move up in West

FALMOUTH, MA:  A Hunter Morris (Auburn) single in the 5th inning with 2 outs and the bases loaded broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Falmouth Commodores a 6-4 win over the Wareham Gatemen at the Arnie Allen Diamond at Guv Fuller Field.  With a Cotuit loss earlier in the day, the Gatemen had a chance to move ahead of the Kettleers in the Western Division standings and be in the driver’s seat for securing 2nd place in the conference and a first round, home playoff game.

Rather, Wareham remains one point behind Cotuit and will have to win tonight vs. Bourne and hope for a Cotuit loss or tie vs. Brewster to move into 2nd place.  A 3rd place finish means that the Gatemen will play a road playoff game on Friday vs. Orleans or Cotuit.

Tonight’s game in Falmouth was a back and forth affair for a good part of the game.  The Gatemen scored first in the 3rd inning when a George Springer (UCONN) single was mishandled by the Commordore’s left fielder; allowing Shea Vucinich (Washington State) to score.  Falmouth matched that run in the bottom of the inning when a Todd Cunningham (Jacksonville State) ground out allowed a run to score; tying the game 1-1.  Cunningham was honored before the game with the CCBL Pro Prospect Award and the Batting Title Award.  He entered the game hoping to eclipse the .400 mark; something that hasn’t been accomplished on the Cape in 29 years.  He finished 0 for 3 and is hitting .388 going into his final game on Wednesday.

Wareham would score single runs in each of the next 3 innings only to be matched and finally eclipsed by Falmouth.  A Connor Rowe (Texas) rbi double off the fence in right-center field put the Gatemen ahead 2-1 in the 4th.  Falmouth responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning on a sloppy play by the Gatemen defense.  A BA Volmuth (Southern Miss) double not only plated one run but he came all the way around to score as the Wareham outfield mishandled the ball and then a throwing error back to the infield allowed Volmuth to come all the way around to score; giving Falmouth a 3-2 lead.

Again, the Gatemen bounced back in the very next inning.  After another George Springer single, he worked his way to 3rd on a stolen base.  Zach Wilson (Arizona State) drove him home with an rbi single and tied the game 3-3.  With two outs in the bottom of the 5th, Wareham starting pitcher Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) walked three consecutive batters and with a full count to Hunter Morris, allowed what turned out to be the game winning hit that drove in two Commodore runs.

Wareham responded again in the 6th with a run on a Derek Dietrich (Georgia Tech) rbi double but that is as close as the Gatemen would come.  Falmouth would add another run while not allowing the Wareham offense to score again on their way to a 6-4 victory.  Jack Armstrong takes the loss; his first of the season and his record falls to 4-1.

The Commodores and Gatemen split the season series 3-3; each team winning all of their home games.  Falmouth presented Todd Cunningham with their MVP Award following the game.  The Commodores will not qualify for the CCBL playoffs and play their final game on Wednesday at Hyannis.

The Gatemen play their regular season finale vs. Western Division Champion Bourne on Wednesday night.  Blake Monar (Indiana) is the expected starter.  Tune into our live broadcast, starting with the Gatemen pregame show starting at 6:45pm.
