Eighth Inning Run Saves Gatemen – Wareham 6 YD 5

WAREHAM, MA:  The Wareham Gatemen (14-14) scored on an rbi, tie breaking double by William Carmona (Stony Brook) in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Gatemen a 6-5 win over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The win moves the Gatemen back to .500 and they sit alone in 3rd place in the CCBL Western Division; 4 points ahead of Falmouth and 4 points behind 2nd place Bourne.

Supported by another terrific start by Justin Amlung (Louisville) who no-hit the Red Sox through 4 innings, the Gatemen scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning, 1 in the 3rd and 2 in the 6th to take 5-0 lead.  Ty Ross (LSU) drove in the first 2 runs in that 2nd inning with an rbi single and John Andreoli (UCONN) scored an unearned run in the 3rd inning on an infield error.

YD starting pitcher Andrew Thurman (UC-Irvine) last 5 innings, he allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, struck out 2 and walked 2 Wareham batters.

Wareham’s 4th and 5th runs were scored off of Red Sox reliever Matt Carasiti (St. John’s) who had a tough 6th inning.  Johnny Field (Arizona) walked to lead off the inning and Carasiti hit Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech).  A passed ball allowed both runners to advance and Field would later score on a wild pitch.  Palka scored Wareham’s 5th run on a Ty Ross’ 3rd rbi of the game; a sacrafice fly that provided the Gatemen a 5-0 cushion.

Yarmouth-Dennis finally got to Amlung in the 6th inning when Jacob Lamb (Washington) drove in his 7th run of the season; cutting the Red Sox deficit to 5-1.  Amlung finished out the 7th; which was his last.  He allowed only 1 run on 6 hits, striking out 5 and did not walk a single batter.  Amlung lowered his era to a CCBL 7th best 1.54.

Amlung was replaced by his Louisville teammate Andy Flett who took the ball to start the 8th inning.  Flett walked two consecutive batters before being lifted for Gatemen closer Konner Wade (Arizona).  Cody Keefer (UCLA) hit Wade’s third pitch for a 2 run double and suddenly YD found themselves back in this game; trailing only 5-3 with a runner in scoring position and no outs.  Wade managed to get two outs but a runner also reached on an infield error by William Carmona that proved costly. With two outs, Jacob Lamb came through once again; delivery a single that drove in the tying runs.

Carmona would make up for the error, however, as he delivered what proved to be the game winning rbi when he doubled home Johnny Field off of YD reliever Matt Reckling (Rice) who ended up taking the loss.  Konner Wade picked up the win but it didn’t come easy as YD made it very interesting right down to the final pitch.

With 2 runners on base and two outs, Wake struck out Anthony Melchionda (Boston College) to record the final out and preserve the 6-5 Gatemen win in front of 1,292 at Spillane Field.

Now winners of 4 out of their last 5 games, Wareham looks to move their record to above .500 when they welcome the Orleans Firebirds for a 7:00pm home game on Friday night.  Barrett Astin (Arkansas) will make his 2nd start of the season for Wareham and he will be opposed by Kurt Heyer (Arizona).

Max Muncy’s (Baylor) 14 game hitting streak came to an end as he went 0 for 4 in this game.
