WAREHAM, Mass. A return to the friendly confines of Spillane Field was just what the Gatemen needed, as they snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating the Falmouth Commodores 6-4.
Wareham starter Josh Mueller (1-0) dug the Gatemen an early hole, giving up two runs in the second inning. Outside of the second frame, Mueller was spectacular, striking out eight and giving up five hits over five innings.
The Gatemen (7-6-1) responded quickly to the pair of Falmouth runs, getting to work in their half of the second inning. Alex Dickerson (Indiana) and Cole Leonida (Georgia Tech) drew back-to-back walks with one out. After Zach Wilson (Arkansas) struck out, Jake Lemmerman (Duke) delivered a two-out single to score Dickerson and make it 2-1 Falmouth.
Shea Vucinich reached on a throwing error by the Falmouth shortstop B.A. Vollmuth to extend the inning. The sequence allowed Leonida to score, tying the game at two runs apiece. Derek Dietrich (Georgia Tech) made the Commodores (4-10-1) pay for the two-out error, blasting a three-run home run to right field to put the Gatemen on top, 5-2. The home run was Dietrich’s third of the year, tying him for the league lead. The four two-out RBIs for the Gatemen in the second inning meant that 19 of the last 21 RBIs the Gatemen tallied came with two outs in an inning.
Falmouth brought the game within two runs at 5-3, but the Gatemen struck back immediately in the bottom of the sixth. Leonida and Wilson started the inning with back to back singles. Lemmerman laid down a bunt and the pitcher Charles Lowell (Wichita State) threw the ball away, bringing home Leonida to put Wareham up 6-3.
The Commodores scored one run off of closer Jordan Swagerty (Arizona State), but that was as close as they would get, as the Gatemen held on for a 6-4 victory. With the win, the Gatemen improve to 7-1 at home in 2009, but they will return to the road on July 4 in search of their first win away from Spillane Field.
