WAREHAM, MA: Nineteen strikeouts from Wareham pitching wasn’t enough to prevent a season series sweep by the Cotuit Kettleers.
Sean Newcomb (Hartford) got the ball for the Gatemen and struck out seven Kettleers in his three innings of work. As the story has been for the majority of the season, the Gatemen bats are silent.
Danny Diekroeger (Stanford) led off the second inning with a single to center field. Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt) reached on a fielder’s choice when Brett Pirtle (Mississippi State) was unable to record an out anywhere. Then Kevin Bradley (Clemson) walked to load the bases. Then Bradley Zimmer doubled to left field to score Diekroeger and Wiseman to make it 2-0 Cotuit.
The Cotuit bats gave right hander Kurt McCune (LSU) a rude welcome to the ball game. Jake Fincher (NC State) led off with a single and then Zimmer singled to right. Fincher stole third and Hunter Cole (Georgia) reached on a fielder’s choice. That allowed Fincher to score.
Then Austin Byler came to the plate and singled to score Zimmer from third. Drew Jackson (Stanford) hit a sacrifice fly to score Cole. After four full innings, Cotuit led Wareham 5-0.
The Gatemen got two runs in the bottom of the seventh off Michael Roberts (Coppin State). With Adam Toth (Baylor) on first after working a five pitch walk, Toth advanced to second on a single by Cole Sturgeon (Louisville). Sturgeon and Toth scored on a two-run single by Trevor Podratz (Hawaii) that was slapped to right field.
The next game for the Gatemen is an afternoon game on Thursday at Stony Brook Field. The Gatemen take on Brewster at 4:30 p.m.
