WAREHAM, MA: Trailing 2-0, the Wareham Gatemen scored 4 consecutive runs and went on to defeat the Chatham Anglers 4-3. Justin Amlung picked up his 3rd win of the season and Konner Wade (Arizona) picked up his league leading 8th save.
Playing their best baseball of the year and winners of 8 of their last 11 games, the Gatemen combined solid pitching with clutch hitting to improve their record to 18-16.
Trailing 2-0 after Richie Schaffer (Clemson) scored on a wild pitch in the first inning and then hit a double in the third inning to give his Anglers a two run lead, the Gatemen began their charge in the 4th inning. Johnny Field (Arizona) scored on an infield error to pull Wareham within a run.
Justin Amlung settled in and didn’t allow a hit after the third inning; only hitting a batter as he held the Anglers scoreless through 6. In the bottom of the 6th after a CT Bradford (Mississippi State) stolen base, Max Muncy (Baylor) hit a bloop single to left-field to move Bradford to third base. Muncy extended his hitting streak to 5 games and has now hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games. Johnny Field’s sacrafice fly scored Bradford to tie the game. William Carmona (Stony Brook) then drilled a clutch, 2 out single up the middle to give Wareham a 3-2 lead.
Scoreless innings of relief by Joseph Flynn (Franklin Pierce) and Andy Flett (Lousiville) setup the 9th for Wade. However, the Gatemen provide what proved to be a much needed insurance run in the bottom of the 8th on a Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) sacracific fly; giving them a 4-2 lead heading into the final frame.
Konner Wade recorded the first two outs of the 9th before giving up a single to Darrell Matthews (California) and an rbi double to pinch hitter Alex Calbick (Maine) that allowed the go ahead run to come to the plate. However, a deep fly ball to centerfield was tracked down by speedy Gatemen outfielder Brandon Thomas (Georgia Tech) to give Wade his 8th save of the season and move him into a tie for 7th place on the Gatemen All-Time, single-season saves list.
Justin Amlung improves to 3-1 with the win and his era is 1.76 on the season. Tim Cooney (Wake Forest) took the loss for Chatham who falls to 11-21-1 on the season and remains in last place in the CCBL Eastern Division. The win keeps the Gatemen in third place as 1st place Hyannis, 2nd place Bourne and 4th place Falmouth all won tonight.
The Gatemen have an off day on Wednesday before returning to action in Falmouth for the 2nd time this week after a 7-5 at Guv Fuller Field on Monday. CCBL Pitcher of the Week Josh Turley (Baylor) will be the starting pitcher.
