Chatham Needs Extra Innings to Defeat Wareham 5-4

CHATHAM, Mass.  The Wareham Gatemen surrendered their share of first place in the Western Division Wednesday night with a 5-4 extra inning loss against the Anglers.

Unlike the would-be season opener scheduled for last Friday, fog did not deter the two teams from playing well into the night, and the presence of lights at Veterans Field ensured that this contest would not end in a tie, like Wareham’s 2-2 stalemate against Brewster the day before.

Once again, the Wareham (2-2-1) bats got off to a quick start but failed to generate enough offense to hold off a late charge from the Anglers (4-1).

In the second, Chris Leonida (Georgia Tech) led off with a single down the left field line, which was followed by a Jake Lemmerman (Duke) double to put two runners in scoring position with no outs.  Chris Hannick (Cal State Northridge) delivered the clutch hit, a 2 RBI single to put the Gatemen up 2-0.

Chatham got one run back in their half of the second inning, but the Gatemen bats came alive again in the third. With two outs and nobody on, the Gatemen bats began to rally: Leonida drew a walk and advanced to third on two passed balls, and Lemmerman walked to put two men aboard.  Hannick delivered the big hit once again, driving home Leonida and Lemmerman to stake Wareham to a 4-1 lead.

Josh Mueller (Eastern Illinois) pitched six strong innings for the Gatemen, giving up just one run on five hits.  He struck out six and walked four, earning a no decision.

The Anglers got to Scott Rembisz (Florida International) in the seventh, scoring three to tie the game and eventually send it to extra innings.  Keith Bilodeau (Maine) pitched a scoreless eighth and a one-two-three ninth, but surrendered three straight singles to begin the tenth, and Chatham won the game on a dropped third strike that skipped away from Leonida.

The Gatmen return to the friendly confines of Spillane Field, where they are 2-0 this year, to take on the defending champion Harwich Mariners (2-3) at 7:00 p.m.  Join broadcasters Alex Perlman and Kevin Copp for the Gatemen pre-game show beginning at 6:45 at
