The Wareham Gatemen (11-9) took game one of their Fourth of July weekend series against the Bourne Braves (9-10-1) on Friday night by a score of 7-4 thanks to the hot hitting of Andrew Calica.
One game after hitting the eventual game-winning home run in a 1-0 victory over Cotuit, Calica went 4 for 5 with 4 RBI to lead the Gatemen to their second consecutive victory. In the process, the speedy center fielder raised his batting average to .524.
Evan Hill started for the Gatemen, going 4.2 innings and giving up one run. Though he pitched well, he was taken out with the bases loaded and the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs in the fifth. Stephen Woods, Jr. (W, 2-0) came on in relief, getting out of the jam and working another inning before departing in the seventh in the midst of another Braves rally.
Alex Robles (L, 0-3) lost for the second time in as many starts against Wareham, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits in 3+ innings pitched. His offense gave him modest support, highlighted by a solo home run by Max McDowell, but couldn’t come up with the big hit when they needed it most.
Ryan Olson picked up a well-earned save, his second, tossing 2.2 innings of one-hit ball to get out of trouble in the seventh and shut the door in the ninth.
The Gatemen also got offensive contributions from Nick Cieri, who was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI, and John Sternagel, who got an RBI base hit of his own.
The Gatemen travel to Bourne on Saturday, where they will play the Braves again at 6 p.m. ET. Their next home game is Sunday at 7 p.m. ET against the Orleans Firebirds.
