07/11/08 – Bourne Downs Wareham Behind Dominant Pitching of Bryce Stowell
In front of 1,567 at New Bedford’s Paul Walsh Field, RHP Bryce Stowell (UC-Irvine) dominated the Wareham hitters as the Bourne Braves defeated the Wareham Gatemen in the “Whaling City”. Playing their second game of the season in New Bedford and their 4th in 3 years, the Gatemen could not get the bats going against the talented right-hander. Stowell pitched 8.1 innings, struck out 7 and scattered 7 hits to pick up his second win of the season and lower his era to a CCBL leading 0.36 and allowing only 10 hits over 25.1 innings pitched.
Wareham starting pitcher Robby Broach (Tulane) also made a terrific start; going 6 innings, allowing only 4 hits and 2 earned runs. Broach’s 6 walks put many Braves on base but he continued to find his way out of trouble and Bourne left 13 runners on base. The Braves did score in the first inning after a walk and a hit batter as Marc Krauss (Ohio) singled to knock in a run. After a wild pitch in the sixth that allowed Tyler Cannon (Virginia) to advance to third, Jamie Johnson’s (Oklahoma) sacrafice fly to left field brought Cannon home and gave Bourne what proved to be their final run.

Matt Way (Washington State) made his first relief appearance of the year for Wareham and did not allow a run over 3 innings. Offensively, Wareham managed 7 hits but never really threatened to score. Ryan Pineda (Cal State-Northridge) had 2 hits; including a long double off the the left-center field fence.
Eric Pettis, Stowell’s teammate at UC-Irvine, picked up a 2 out save in the 9th; relieving Stowell after he was hit by a come-backer in the 9th. Pettis’ save was his 5th of the year; 4th best in the CCBL.
The Gatemen make another weekend trip to Chatham tonight for a 7:00pm game at Veteran’s Field against the A’s. Dallas Keuchel (Arkansas) gets the start for Wareham and he will face Chatham’s Kevin Couture (USC). Autograph night is on Sunday as Wareham returns home for a 5:00pm game at Spillane Field on Sunday vs. the YD Red Sox.
