Bourne Blows Out Wareham At Doran Park

BOURNE, MA: The Bourne bats exploded for a season-high 11 runs on 15 hits, as the Braves took down Wareham, 11-4, on Wednesday night at Doran Park.

Bourne, which came into the game ninth in the league in runs with 91, put together a powerful offensive performance and improved to 13-14-1. Wareham, meanwhile, fell to 6-23 and fell farther behind the Braves for fourth place in the Western Division.

The Gatemen actually struck first in the top of the first inning. Center fielder Cole Sturgeon (Louisville) led off the game with a double to deep right field and came around to score when right fielder Sean McMullen (LSU) ripped a single to right. But Bourne surged back with three runs of its own in the home half of the first. The Braves tallied four hits, including three long doubles, in the first frame to push three runs across and take a 3-1 lead against Wareham starter Andro Cutura (Southeastern Louisiana).

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Bourne added to its lead with an even bigger inning. The Braves sent all nine men to the plate and scored six runs, starting the frame with six consecutive hits. The fifth of those base knocks was a three-run double to left field by Braves right fielder Mark Laird (LSU). Wareham left-hander Ryan Riga came on in relief of Cutura after Laird’s hit and gave up a run before inducing a 5-4-3 double play to get out of the inning.

The Gatemen threatened with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Catcher Chris Chinea (LSU) scored on an infield single by shortstop Ethan Gross (Memphis). Gross then scored on another double from Sturgeon, this time to left-center field.
But the Braves countered with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to re-extend the lead to eight.

Wareham got one more in the top of the ninth as the Gatemen loaded the bases and Bourne right-hander Hawtin Buchanan (Ole Miss) walked in a run to make it 11-4. But Wareham left the bases and loaded and Buchanan put the wraps on the victory.
Sturgeon pitched the final two innings for the Gatemen. After giving up a single and then inducing a double play in the seventh, Sturgeon struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth. At the plate, the two-way player was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

Left fielder Tino Lipson (UC-Davis) and Gross each also had multi-hit nights with two knocks apiece. As a team, Wareham racked up 12 hits.

The 11 runs scored by Bourne were a season-high allowed by the Gatemen.
