FALMOUTH, MA: The Wareham Gatemen scored 3 runs in the first inning and held on to defeat the hottest team in the Cape Cod League 3-1 at Arnie Allen Diamond in Falmouth.
The Commodores entered the game winning 5 straight games and here looking to reach the .500 mark after starting the season 0-7. Wareham, winners of only 1 game in the previous 6 were looking to keep pace in the very competitive CCBL Western Division.
The Gatemen wasted no time taking a commanding lead in this first meeting of the season between Wareham and Falmouth. With one out, Johnny Field (Arizona) singled and was followed by a Robert Refsnyder (Arizona) double to give the Gatemen two runners in scoring position early in this ballgame. Wareham RBI leader Max Muncy (Baylor) delivered once again with an rbi single up the middle to give the Gatemen a 1-0 lead.
Two batters later and after a Max Muncy stolen base, second basemen Mott Hyde (Georgia Tech) delivered a 2-out single to drive in 2 runs and give Gatemen starting pitcher Brent Suter (Harvard) 3 runs to work with before he even threw a pitch.
Suter took full advantage of his situation, pitching the next 5 innings, allowing only 1 unearned run, striking out 3, walking 3 and scattering just 4 hits. The Falmouth run was scored in the 3rd inning on a Ross Heffley (Western Carolina) rbi single in the bottome of the third inning.
With no outs in the 6th inning and a runner on third base, Daniel Feehan (UCONN) entered the game from the Gatemen bullpen. Two strikeouts and a flyball ball later, Feehan masterfully preserved the Wareham 3-1 lead. Feehan created his own jam in the 7th when he walked the first two batters who then advanced a base on a sacrafice bunt by his UCONN teammate Billy Ferriter. With the tying runs in scoring position, Feehan retired the final two batters and once again protected the two run lead.
After a scoreless inning of relief by Joseph Flynn (Franklin Pierce) in the 8th, Konner Wake (Arizona) pitched the 9th and picked up his 3rd save of the year.
The win give the Gatemen a 7-8 record and leaves them tied with Falmouth for 3rd place in the Western Division. They are two points behind the Bourne Braves who they will welcome to Spillane Field on Wednesday night in the first meeting between the two clubs. Falmouth drops to 7-9 after their 5 game win streak.
Matthew Grimes (Georgia Tech) takes the ball for Wareham at Spillane Field in the 7:00pm start. Tune into www.gatemen.org for the live broadcast that starts with the pregame show at 6:46pm.
