WAREHAM, MA: – Behind a dominant starting pitching performance by Jack Armstrong (Vanderbilt) and another big game by Max Muncy (Baylor), the Wareham Gatemen won their 4th straight game 4-2 over the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
Armstrong did give up the early lead in the 3rd when CCBL All-Star Johnny Ruettiger’s (Arizona State) single drove home a run and staked Hyannis to a 1-0 lead. Wareham would get that run right back in the bottom half of the inning when last night’s hero Jonathan Smith (Tenn-Wesleyan) tied the game with his own rbi single.
A perfect 4th inning by Armstrong set the stage for the Gatemen offense. Max Muncy (Baylor) hit a solo homer to lead off the home half of the 4th and put Wareham ahead 2-1. Muncy’s 3rd homer of the season gave him 22 rbi on the season; extending his league lead. After a John Andreoli (UCONN) single, Derek Dennis (Michigan) would drive him home with an rbi triple; putting the Gatemen ahead 3-1.
Wareham added their 4th run in the 5th inning on an rbi single by Max Muncy; his 23rd run battted in on the season and more importantly, giving Wareham a 3 run cushion heading into the later innings.
Jack Armstrong turned the ball over to Andrew McKirahan (Texas) to start the 7th inning. Armstrong finished with 8 strikeouts, allowed only 2 hits, gave up 1 run and walked one 1 Hyannis batter. McKirahan pitched two scoreless innings before giving way for Ken Ferrer (Elon) in the 9th. Ferrer gave up a lead off double to Cam Seitzer (Oklahoma) who later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Micowski (Georgia State). However, Ferrer would get out of the jam and close out the game for the Gatemen while picking up his 3rd save.
CCBL All-Star Tony Caldwell (Auburn), John Andreoli and Johnathan Smith had 2 hits apiece for the Gatemen offense.
With the win, Wareham moves to within 1 point of second place Bourne and within 3 points of first place Cotuit. The Gatemen improve their record to 16-18-1 and have won 8 of the past 11 games.
Wareham plays again tomorrow against division leading Cotuit where Josh Urban (Texas) will get the start at 5:00pm
