2009 Season Ends With Playoff Loss to Cotuit

COTUIT, MA:  The Wareham Gatemen fell to the Cotuit Kettleers in a one-game, first round playoff game 5-2 at Lowell Park.  Cotuit will now move onto the 2nd round to face the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in a best of 3, 2nd round playoff series that begins today.

Justin Grimm (Georgia) dominated the Wareham offense through 6 innings, striking out ten, allowing only one run and scattering on 3 Gatemen hits.  The Wareham run off of Grimm came on a Jake Lemmerman (Duke) rbi single in the 5th inning.

Wareham starter Cole Green (Texas) pitched two scoreless innings to open up the game; allowing only one hit to college teammate Cameron Rupp (Texas).  Cotuit scored their first run in the 3rd inning.  Tony Plagman (Florida State) doubled and advance to 3rd on a sacrafice bunt.  He later scored on a Chris Bisson (Kentucky) sacrafice fly to leftfield and gave the Kettleers a 1-0 lead.  A Kevin Keyes (Texas) rbi single in the 4th inning put Cotuit up 2-0.

After the Gatemen run in the 5th, Cotuit broke the game open for good in the very next inning.  A Zach Cone (Arkansas) single plated Cotuit’s 3rd run before Cody Stanley (UNC-Wilmington) put a ball in the right field woods for a 2 run homer; giving the Kettleers a 5-1 lead.  Cole Green was lifted for Scott Rembisz (Florida International) and who provided the Gatemen with a solid relief effort for 1.1 innings; giving Wareham a chance to stay in the game.

Grimm was lifted after 6 innings and the Gatemen would get a chance in the 8th inning.  Newcomer Robert Kral (College of Charleston), who hit .417 with 2 doubles and 3 rbi in only 5 games, doubled to lead off the 8th inning.  Shea Vucinich’s (Washington State) 2nd hit of the game drove home Kral and closed the Cotuit lead to 5-2.  A Derek Dietrich (Georgia Tech) ground-out back to the pitcher resulted in a 1-6-3 double play and squashed any further comeback.

Matt Barnes (UCONN) pitched two perfect innings in relief of Rembisz but the Gatemen went down in order in the 9th; the final out a Connor Rowe (Texas) fly out off of Ben Rowen (Virginia Tech) who picked up a 3 inning save for Cotuit.

While Cotuit will play Yarmouth-Dennis in a best of 3 series, the Orleans Firebirds will take on the Bourne Braves in the other 2nd round match-up.  Orleans defeated the Anglers 4-3 in the other first round match-up.
