08/07/08 - Broach and Gatemen Take First Game of Double-Header

Robby Broach (Tulane) went only 5.1 innings but had one of his more impressive performance of the season on the mound for the Gatemen as Wareham went on to defeat the Chatham A's 5-4 this afternoon in a rare 1:00 start at Spillane Field.  Broach, in his final start of the season, struck out 10 Chatham hitters; including the first 6 of the game, gave up 4 four runs and yielded 6 hits.

The Gatemen got off to a fast start in this game thanks to the lead-off homer in the first inning by Raynor Cambell (Baylor).  Wareham added to that lead in the 3rd on a 2-run double by Aaron Baker (Oklahoma) who knocked in his 24th and 25th runs of the season.  The Gatemen took a 3-0 lead into the fourth before Yan Gomes (Tennessee) hit a solo shot off of Broach to bring Chatham to within 2 runs.  Gomes had 3 hits on the day to go along with 2 rbi.

After A's starter Bobby Hernandez (Barry College) was lifted after 3 innings, Jake Lemmerman (Duke) continued his hot hitting with his 2nd hit of the game; this time an rbi single to give Wareham a 4-1 lead.

Chatham tied the score in the 6th inning thanks to rbi singles by Evan Ocheltree (Wake Forest) and Gomes.  Broach was lifted with one out and the bases loaded in the inning and relieved by Zach Brewster (Georgia Tech).  Brewster got a quick out but then walked a run in from third base to give Chatham their 4th and game tying run.

The Gatemen answered the Chatham 6th by retaking the lead in the 6th thanks to another rbi single by Jake Lemmerman; his 3rd hit of the game and his 4th rbi in two nights.  Brewster remained in the game and picked up the victory by going 3.2 inning of relief; not allowing a run and striking out 4 Chatham batters.  Other Wareham stars include Connor Rowe (Texas) who picked up 2 stolen bases and the Wareham infield defense; making a number of terrific plays around the diamond despite the new alignment of Lemmerman at third, Cambell at shortstop, Shea Vucinich (Washington State) and Baker at first.

Wareham plays next tonight in the second game of the double-header when the welcome the Bourne Braves to Spillane Field at 7:00pm. The starting pitcher is still to be determined but is expected to be either Jimmy Saris (Georgetown) or Matt Way (Washington State).  The Braves still have an outside shot at a playoff berth; pending the outcome of games with Hyannis and Falmouth.
