08/03/08 - Hyannis Comeback Over Gatemen Propel Mets into First Place
The Hyannis Mets turned a 4-3 deficit in the bottom of the 7th into a 6-5 victory at McKeon Park; giving the Mets sole possession of first place in the CCBL Western Division. The loss was Wareham's 7th one run loss of the season and drop the Gatemen to 15-24-1 on season; which concludes on Thursday in a rare double-header.
For the second consecutive game, late errors hurt the Gatemen and combined with 3 Hyannis hits in the 7th, the Mets were able to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 lead. The Gatemen got one run back in the 8th on a Cole Leonida (Georgia Tech) double but could not get Blake Dean (LSU) home from second after a single and stolen base in the 9th.
The Gatemen once again scored some early runs; plating 2 in the first and another 2 in the second. In the first after a Raynor Cambell (Baylor) single, Ryan Pineda (Cal-State Northridge) tripled to score Cambell. Dean would sinlge home Pineda to give Wareham a 2-0 lead. Brett Einber (Arkansas) led off the second with his 4th homer of the season. A Cambell sacrafice fly later in the inning would give the Gatemen a 4-0 lead but Wareham would also leave 3 on base; contributing to a total of 10 runners that were stranded in the game by the Gatemen.
Starting pitcher Max Perlman (Harvard) went 6 innings, striking out 7, allowing 8 hits and 3 earned runs. Josh Slaats (Hawaii) took the loss for the Gatemen.
Pineda, Dean and Eiber would all get two hits apiece and account for 6 of Wareham's 10 hits.
The Gatemen have an off day on Monday but return to action on Tuesday at home vs. Cotuit. Dallas Keuchel (Arkansas) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wareham.
