07/09/08 - Dustin Ackley and Mariners Deal Gatemen a Devistating Loss
University of North Carolina All-American and 2007 National Freshman of the Year Dustin Ackley has picked up right where he left off for the Tar Heals where his career batting average is over .400. In the last 2 innings at Spillane Field, Ackley went 2 for 2 with 4 rbi; including a 2 run homer in the 8th and a 2 run, go-ahead triple in the 9th as the Harwich Mariners came back from a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Wareham Gatemen 7-6.

The Gatemen looked to be cruising to victory last night as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning off of a Blake Dean (LSU) rbi double. Dean, who also had a tremendous college season at LSU where he led the Tigers to the College World Series, added to that lead with an rbi single in the 4th inning. The inning also include 4 more Gatemen runs; including a 2 run single by Raynor Cambell (Baylor) an rbi single by Jake Lemmerman (Duke) and a sacrafice fly by Aaron Baker (Oklahoma).

Wareham maintained a 6-1 lead into the 8th inning behind a strong starting pitching performance by Max Perlman (Harvard). Perlman gave up a 2 run homer to Ackley with one out in the 8th before handing to the ball over to the bullpen. Josh Slaats (Hawaii) retired the final 2 batters in the 8th and Wareham closer Chris Hicks (Georgia Tech) took the mound at the start of the 9th inning. Hicks surrended 4 hits and 2 runs before he was lifted for Austin Graham (Alabama) who would be asked to face Dustin Ackley. Ackley sent the very first pitch into deep left-center field; clearing the bases and and giving Harwich a 7-6 lead. Mike Morrison (Cal-State Fullerton) closed the game for Harwich in the 9th and picked up his second save. Chris Hicks was responsible for all 4 runs in the 9th inning and took the loss for Wareham.

Blake Dean was heading towards "player of the game" honors with 3 hits and 2 rbi before Ackley's late innings display. Raynor Cambell had 2 hits and 2 rbi for Wareham and has raised his 9th best in league batting average to .328.
The Gatemen will try to bounce back this afternoon when they travel to Cotuit for a 5:00 start. Brandon Workman (Texas) will take the mound coming off his 2-hit, complete game vs. the Kettleers.
