06/30/10 - Cotuit 9th Sinks Wareham 8-5
By ERIC SILVERMAN
WAREHAM, MA: - The Gatemen
dropped their fourth in a row Wednesday night, falling to the Kettleers 8-5 at
Spillane Field.
It was an
evening which saw a recently struggling Wareham offense start to click against
Cotuit starter Matt Andriese (Cal Riverside). The Gatemen’s first batter of the
game, Adam McClain (Memphis) singled to right center to lead off the game.
After Max Muncy (Baylor) replaced McClain at first on a fielder’s choice,
George Springer (Connecticut) hit the team’s first triple of the season to put
Wareham on the board. Alex Dickerson (Indiana) then doubled home Springer to
give the Gatemen a 2-0 lead after the first.
Josh Urban
(Texas) was impressive through the first two innings of his second start of the
year for Wareham. However, Urban ran into trouble in the top of the third,
hitting Zach Cone (Georgia) and allowing a double to CJ Cron (Utah) to put two
in scoring position with no outs. Both runners scored off a Michael Yastrzemski
(Vanderbilt) groundout to tie up the game at 2-2. After striking out Paul
Hoilman (East Tennessee State) for the first out of the inning, Urban walked
Levi Hyams (Georgia) and allowed Jordan Leyland (UC Irvine) to single. Brooks
Pinckard (Baylor) drove them both in with a double off the right field wall and
an error by Springer, putting Cotuit up 4-2.
The
Kettleers added another run in the top of the fifth. Hoilman drew a walk to
lead off the inning and Hyams followed with a bunt single. Leyland bunted to
sacrifice the runners over, but Wareham catcher Chris Walker’s (Fordham) errant
throw put Leyland on base and allowed Hoilman to score.
The Gatemen
answered back in the bottom half of the inning. After Springer reached first on
a two-out walk, Dickerson doubled along the right field line to drive him in.
Walker followed with an RBI single to right center to cut the Kettleers’ lead
to 5-4.
Wareham tied
up the game in the sixth when Muncy hit an RBI-double in the sixth to score
Derek Dennis (Michigan).
In the top
of the seventh, Devin Burke (Duke) (0-1) relieved Urban, who gave up five runs
(four earned) off of nine hits and four walks while striking out three. Burke
pitched two scoreless innings, but struggled in the ninth. The righty gave up a
leadoff single to Cron and Cone doubled to right center to score the go-ahead
run. Burke struck out Yastrzemski and intentionally walked Hoilman before
exiting the game in favor of Jake Davies (Georgia Tech). With runners at first
and second and a left-handed hitting Hyams coming to bat, Davies had the
matchup advantage and a force at all three bases.
However,
Hyams won the matchup and singled in Crone to make it a 7-5 game. Keith
Bilodeau (Maine) replaced Davies, and struck out two but allowed his inherited
runner to score when Pinckard drove in Hoilman with an RBI single.
Wareham was
not able to make a comeback, and was defeated by Cotuit 8 to 5. Kettleers
reliever Kyle McMillen (Kent State) (1-1) pitched 3.2 scoreless innings for the
win.
Alex
Dickerson went three-for-three in the loss. The leftfielder also walked twice,
scored, and had two RBIs. Jerrud Sabourin (Indiana) and Derek Dennis also each
added two hits.
