06/27/12 - Balanced Performance Propels Gatemen Over Braves
By SCOTT EATON
BOURNE, MA: Behind a 14 hit, 9 run offensive output and 3 hit, 13 strikeout performance by the pitching staff, the Wareham Gatemen defeated the Bourne Braves in Western Division showdown at Doran Park on Wednesday evening.
Coming off of two consecutive losses and losing 4 of the last 5 games, the Gatemen responded with perhaps their best overall game of the season. Starting pitcher Brad Kuntz (Baylor) picked up his first win of the season by going 5 innings, striking out 6, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run. He benefited from a 4-0 lead before he even threw a pitch as the Gatemen offense spotted him 4 runs; highlighted by a Daniel Palka (Georgia Tech) 3-run, 2 out homer in the top of the first inning.
Starting pitcher Mike Mayers (Ole Miss) for Bourne settled down after the first inning and matched Kuntz by pitching shut-out 2nd and 3rd innings. Bourne would plate their only run in the bottom of the 4th when Chase McDonald (East Carolina) hit his first homerun of the season.
The Gatemen offense remained quiet until the 6th inning Mott Hyde (Georgia Tech) delivered one of his 3 hits on the evening to lead off the inning and was followed by a Matt Walsh (Franklin Pierce) hit. After a 1 out Cole Sturgeon (Louisville) walk to load the bases, Ty McFarland (James Madison) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to left field. A walk to Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) loaded the bases for Wareham for the 2nd time in the inning before Tyler Horan (Virginia Tech) singled home 2 runs and put the Gatemen up 7-1.
Nick Rumbelow (LSU) relieved Kuntz and pitched 2 scoreless innings; including striking out the side in the 7th inning. The Gatemen added 2 more insurance runs in the top of the 9th inning and Joe Filomeno (Louisville) pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th inning to secure the win over the Bourne Braves in front of 1,027 just over the Bourne Bridge at Doran Park.
Daniel Palka, Mott Hyde, Ty McFarland & Cole Sturgeon all had mutiple hit games for the Gatemen. Wareham improves to 5-6 on the season and the Braves drop to 2-8. The Gatemen play the Falmouth Commodores tomorrow night at home to make up the rain out from earlier in the week. A win over the Commodores will lift them into a tie for first place in the CCBL Western Division. Kurt McCune (LSU) will be the starting pitcher for the Gatemen.
The Gatemen pregame show will come on the air at 6:45.
